Who Is Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble?

Launched in late 2013 by Dr. Judith Overcash Acres and David Acres, founder and director of Counterpoint (UK), Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble is a professional vocal ensemble of sopranos, altos, and countertenors, specializing in the performance of sacred and secular music from the middle ages through the modern era. Our ensemble combines polyphony, literature, art and dialogue to create exceptional music within an historical context.

Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble explores the variety and beauty found in a cappella music – from chant to 20th-century, medieval carols to the avant-garde, Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble is devoted to the creation of delightful programs designed to entertain, educate, and above all to stir the soul.

Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble has at its core a rich history of choral excellence. Trained from the age of six in the English Choral tradition, David Acres, Musical Director and professional countertenor, brings with him an extensive background in both the direction and performance of multiple genres of a cappella music. He has founded and directed numerous successful ensembles throught the UK, and continues in his role of Musical Director for both of Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble's 'sister' ensembles - Counterpoint (Exeter, UK), and The King's Counterpoint (Charleston, SC). Executive Artistic Director Dr. Judith Overcash Acres holds both Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Early Music Performance Practices, and in addition to co-founding both Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble and The King's Counterpoint with Mr. Acres, is herself an experienced choral director, educator, actor, and professional soprano. She is currently the Executive Artistic Director of The King's Counterpoint as well as Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble, and co-manages Counterpoint (UK) with Mr. Acres.

Though a relatively young ensemble, at its inception Contrapunctus Early Music wasn't really altogether new: the group had its roots in the small ensemble Cantores Cleveland, which had a long and fruitful history in and around Northeast Ohio. After many years under the leadership of founder and Director Barbara Margolis, Cantores Cleveland was planning to fold - until Barbara and Judith had the opportunity to perform together in Cantores' final program in the spring of 2013.  Not long thereafter, Judith was asked to assume Executive Directorship of Cantores Cleveland, at a time when Judith and David had been in the early stages of founding a professional high-voices ensemble. The high-voices idea was "shelved" for the moment, and together Judith and David began the process of re-creating the ensemble from the ground up, moving the group to the next level of development while both striving to maintain the organization's original mission and transform it into a successful professional ensemble. After working with a sub-set of the new ensemble for their "Angel Voices" programs, David and Judith returned to their original concept of a high-voices ensemble, and Contrapunctus Early Music is now the embodiment of thier original concept: Contrapunctus Early Music : A High Voices Ensemble.
